A Walk With The President Tour

Tennessee’s second oldest town is brought to life as you stroll down the same streets that Andrew Johnson did when he returned from the White House in 1869. The 90-minute tour departs from the lobby of the General Morgan Inn at 9:30 a.m., Monday through Saturday, April through October. Tour limited to 12 people. For group reservations call 423-787-0500.

Home of the 17th President of the United States. Includes the Visitor Center, Museum, Tailor Shop, two Greeneville residences and National Cemetery, the burial site of President Johnson. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m daily. Closed New Years Day, Christmas Day and Thanksgiving. Admission: Free; Located in downtown Greeneville. *Please note ~ The Presidents Homestead, which is normally open for free tours, is now closed while it undergoes major rehabilitation. This closure which began September 1, 2004, is expected to continue through February 2005. The following attractions remain open to the public; the Visitor Center which includes a 14 minute film, a museum, and the Presidents Tailor Shop; the Presidents early home which includes exhibits about Andrew Johnson; and the National Cemetery where the President and his family are interred.

Visitors Center and museum open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Campground and park open year-round, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the summer and until 6 p.m. during winter. Handicapped accessible. Senior rates for camping. Admission to pool is $3.00. From I-81 traveling south, Exit 57, 28 miles. From I-81 traveling north, Exit 23, 28 miles.

Step across the threshold of the Dickson-Williams Mansion and into a storied past filled with exquisite antique furnishings, immortal American heroes, and an intriguing history. A prime example of Federal architecture, the mansion was built in 1821 by Greenevilles first postmaster, William Dickson. During the Civil War, the mansion served as officers quarters for both Confederate and Union troops. Daily 90-minute tours depart from the lobby of the General Morgan Inn at 1:00 p.m. Tours are limited to 12 people. For group reservations, call 423-787-0500. No tours are given Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day.

Home of Rev. Samuel Witherspoon Doak, frontier Presbyterian minister and educator who co-founded Tusculum College. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Doak's home built ca. 1830 houses period furnishings and offers educational programs for adults and children, as well as special events throughout the year.
